Toovar Palak Dal/Spinach with pigeon peas

  • Toovar Palak Dal/Tur Dal Palak:





  • Ingredients:
          1. Toovar dal (1 small bowl)
          2. Spinach/Palak (1 bunch or 250 gm)
          3. Oil (1 tblspn)
          4. Mustard seeds (rai)
          5. Cumin seeds (jeera)
          6. Onion (1 no chopped)
          7. Green chillies (3-4 chopped)
          8. Tomato (1 no chopped)
          9. Ginger-Garlic paste/Wet Masala
         10. Asafoetida/Hing
         11. Salt to taste
         12. Water


  • Preparation & Cooking:
          1. Wash clean toovar/tur dal and cook it 75%.
          2. Heat oil in a broad wok/kadhai,add mustard & cumin seeds.
          3. After the seeds crackle add the asafoetida/hing about half tspn,chopped
              onion,green chillies & tomato,saute for 2 mins.
          4. Add the ginger-garlic paste/wet masala,saute for 2 mins.
          5. Add the clean chopped spinach/palak and mix well with all the ingredients.
          6. After about 3-4 mins,add the 75% cooked dal and mix well.
          7. Add salt to taste and cook for 10-15 mins.
          8. Serve hot with rotis/chapatis.

This is my favourite dish.My Mother-in-law is also a very good cook who used to add one extra thing,Tamarind water with this which makes the Palak Dal yummy and I like to have it with steamed Rice.
